The spring rate (or stiffness) must be precisely matched to the vehicle’s weight, suspension geometry, and wheel load to ensure balanced performance.

Spring rate also directly affects roll stiffness and body roll. By reducing body roll, the amount of wheel camber change is minimized — maintaining optimal tyre contact with the road and improving cornering grip. For most vehicles, increasing the original spring rate to an optimum rate enhances tyre adhesion and reduces body roll for more responsive handling. However, increasing it beyond this optimum can reduce handling potential, as tyres may lose contact with the road over bumps, compromising grip and safety.
